In April of 2007, the first phase of  “Ol’ Red”  was completed.  "Ol' Red" is a 1928 GMC fire truck owned and operated by Hal & Beth Hartel. This beauty was lettered and striped using 1-shot sign painter's paint. Sundance Graphics designed the HVFD logo and applied it and all related lettering by hand.  Future plans call for ornamental stripe and scroll type accents.  Current images of “Ol’ Red” can be found in the “More” section, under ‘Greg’s Work’.

Cold Air Intake Tube
Also in April of 2007, the cold air intake tube belonging to Mr. Rudy McDaniel’s 2003 Mustang Cobra SVT, was completed. This project was painted to represent the theme of the show, and was accomplished exclusively with House of Kolor products.  Clear coat was applied by Knox Auto Body & Paint, in Carrollton, Virginia.  Current photos of this completed project can be found in the “Airbrushing” section, under ‘Greg’s Work’.  For details regarding this year’s PT’s In Paradise show and a possible raffle of the golf cart, go to  www.ptsinparadise.com.

Castleberry Customs, ’36 Ford pickup
In June of 2007, Castleberry Customs; owned and operated by Lee Castleberry in Suffolk, Virginia; completed a two year, frame off, build of a ’36 Ford pickup for client, Henry Laydin.  Greg was contacted to apply the extensive, yet subtle, graphics throughout the truck.  Graphics applied include pinstriping on the exterior of the truck, the tailgate, details within the interior, on the gas tank, the gravel shield, within the engine compartment on the Chevrolet 350 RamJet plenum and the polished stainless coil cover.  Current photos of this project can be found in the “Pinstriping” & “More” sections of ‘Greg’s Work’.  For more information about Castleberry Customs, contact Lee Castleberry at (757)871-0798 or find shop photos of Castleberry Customs at www.hotrodhotline.com.

Huey Helicopter Rudder Blade
In June of 2007, GYSGT SSCN Michael Kottmer of the United States Marine Corps; stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base; contacted Greg on behalf of his entire unit, to airbrush a custom mural on a rudder blade from a Huey Helicopter.  The completed piece was presented to their CO as a retirement gift.  This was, by far, one of the most unique projects Greg has been involved with, to date.  It was a privilege and a pleasure to work with GYSGT Kottmer on this project and I was grateful for the opportunity to do this for him, and his unit.  Thanks for all you guys do, each and every day. Current photos of this project can be found in the “Airbrushing” section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Castleberry Customs, ’31 Ford sedan
In July of 2007, Castleberry Customs called upon Greg to apply unique graphics to a ’31 Ford sedan, owned by Charlie Lewis.  Charlie left the design to Lee’s discretion and the end result was a collaboration of ideas between Lee and Greg.  Current photos of this street rod can be found in the ‘Pinstriping’ section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Robert ‘Black Dog’ Benedict
On August 19th, 2007, the airbrush community lost an accomplished artist and teacher in Robert “Black Dog” Benedict.  I was privileged to have had the opportunity to learn from him at the Airbrush Action Getaways; and I am eternally grateful for his willingness to teach, his enthusiasm, and his support.  He was, and will continue to be, a significant influence and inspiration in my own work.  His talents have been called upon, by God, for the world to see and the heavens are now his “canvas”.  I will remember him and his spirit with every breathtaking sunset.  Godspeed, ‘Black Dog’. Virginia Nationals “PT’s In Paradise” Show in Williamsburg, Virginia
On September 6th, 7th, & 8th, 2007,  Greg was invited to attend the PT’s In Paradise Show hosted by the Country Cruisers at the Great Wolf Lodge, in Williamsburg, Virginia.  The show is an annual event to benefit The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.  Greg and “The Crew” were busy all weekend, fielding inquiries, etching glass, pinstriping, and applying hand painted graphics to several participants’ vehicles.  The show was a resounding success for CHKD and Sundance Graphics.  Greg would like to thank John Tisdale and Karl Fowler of the Country Cruisers for the invitation and we look forward to attending this year’s event.  A sincere and special “THANK YOU!!” goes out to “The Crew” (Kristy Rudy, Buddy Unangst, Mark Fuller, Tim Martin, Caleb Haynes, Jordan Unangst, & Ken Shockley, Jr.) for all your help and hard work.  I would never have been able to pull it off without you guys and gals!!!  Another “Special Thanks” to Daryl and Sheila Lannouette for stopping by with a mother load of fresh baked, home made cookies….they didn’t last long!!!

2005 Harley Davidson Road King Custom
In October of 2007, Greg was contacted by Tidewater Motorcycles, Inc. of Suffolk, Virginia to apply a custom paint job on a clinet’s 2005 Harley Davidson Road King Custom.  After meeting with the owner of the bike, Greg developed sketches depicting the customer’s desired theme of a “horse trapped in hell”.  A total of five murals were applied to a three stage candy apple red base.  The murals were applied on each hard saddle bag, both sides of the gas tank, and the upper ferring.  The mural on the upper ferring depicts the stallion “busting out of hell”.  The entire project was achieved exclusively, utilizing House of Kolor products.  The House of Kolor clearcoat was applied by Rob Moore of Knox Auto Body & Paint, in Carrollton, Virginia.  Thanks to TMI for all of their referrals and especially to Pam & Brian Mathis, and Pat & Bill Brewer for their coordinated efforts on this project. Current photos of this project can be found in the ‘Airbrushing’ section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Cecil’s Garage & Museum
In November & December of 2007, Greg was contacted by Cecil Proffit to pinstripe and apply graphics to a handful of projects that were in the works at that time.  Cecil is a KKOA Hall of Fame inductee and owns Cecil’s Garage in Windsor, Virginia which also includes a museum housing Cecil’s lifelong personal collection of Rods, Customs, motorcycles, & tractors in every form and scale imaginable.  Cecil opens his museum to car clubs, bike clubs, and anyone interested on an ‘appointment only’ basis.  Contact information for Cecil’s Garage is provided in the ‘Links’ section.

Kustom Hot Rod Dresser and Hutch
In December of 2007, Greg completed work on a one-of-a-kind kustom hot rod inspired dresser and hutch.  The dresser was finished in white with black trim and accented with red and white pinstripes.  The drawer faces were then covered with magazine covers and articles from vintage hot rod and custom car related magazines.  (Note: NO VINTAGE MAGAZINES WERE ABUSED, BUTCHERED, DESTROYED OR DISMANTLED in the creation and subsequent completion of this project.).  You’ll find pictures of this project in the “MORE” section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Karl Fowler’s Hood Mural
In March of 2008, Greg completed a custom hood mural for Karl Fowler’s 2006 PT Cruiser.  Karl’s idea was developed into a concept sketch by Greg, depicting a mythical lion head whose mane consists of a stylized looking real fire.  The flames that make up the mane contain ghosted images of some of Karl’s favorite cartoon characters.  This project was achieved with House of Kolor’s candy organic green and was clear coated by a friend of Karl’s.  Since completion, Karl’s PT has received a “Best in Class” award in a class field of approximately twelve Chrysler vehicles at a recent show on the Virginia Beache boardwalk.   Karl states that he’s “not through with Greg yet”, so check back as this little Cruiser continues to evolve.  You’ll find pictures of this project in the “Murals” section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Cecil Proffit’s Custom Cushman
In April 2008, Greg completed work on a custom Cushman, restored by Cecil Proffit.  Greg was asked to apply the extensive pinstriping, lettering, John Deere logos, and even a tribute to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth in the form of a Rat Fink head on the hood.  You can view current photos of the completed Cushman in the “Pinstriping” section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

Cecil Proffit’s Car & Bike Show
In May of 2008, Greg was invited to attend Cecil Proffit’s Car & Bike Show.  The show is an annual nonprofit event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Greg’s work was on display while opportunities to pinstripe on-site came in the form of Rob Moore’s custom painted ’79 Harley Davidson and Johnny Rousey’s ’48 Anglia.  The original pinstriping and the “Fool’s Gold” cartoon, on the trunk lid, was painted by fellow striper and friend, Igor.  Greg was asked to continue the pinstriping from Igor’s original design, around the frenched license plate area.  Greg also applied additional striping to both door jambs.  Pictures of these projects can be found in the “Pinstriping” section of ‘Greg’s Work’.

About The Artist

Greg Rudy has been an artist and hot rod nut for most of his life.  Some of his earliest memories are of the first Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars he got as a kid.  Crayons and markers soon followed, and the combination became the basis for the bug that Greg has been unable to shake ever since.  He eats, sleeps, and breathes all things KUSTOM and this is the inspiration for his art.  “I was always drawing hot rods or kustoms or cartoon monsters in school.  Some of my best work is now in the possession of former teachers……..or buried deep within the local landfill.  I’ve got it bad, just ask my wife.”

While acknowledging admiration for, and inspiration by, such artists as Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth, Kenneth ‘Von Dutch’ Howard, Von Franco, Craig Fraser, Doug Dorr, and a local striper by the name of Igor; Greg credits his dad, Will Rudy, as being his biggest influence and the source from which he inherited his natural talent.  “He was an extremely talented artist.  He could paint beautiful watercolor or oil portraits and then turn right around and draw a cartoon sketch of an Ed Roth type hot rod; doing a nasty burnout, with a big hairy hand coming out of the top of it, grabbing a Hurst shifter.  He did this stuff out of his head and I became familiar with Ed Roth’s work as a result.  Dad was a drag racer and hot rodder from back in the day; so he’d take my brother and I, to the hobby store, buy a couple of models and teach us how to build them around our kitchen table.  Painting them was, and still is, my favorite part.”

Greg has had very little formal art training, with the exception of the Airbrush Action Getaways.  “If college had offered a curriculum like that, I probably would’ve become one of those life-long students.  I probably would’ve stayed in school”.  Through the Getaways, Greg has had the opportunity to meet and learn from several other influential artists.  Some of those artists include Craig Fraser, Steve VanDemon, Robert Benedict, “Cross-Eyed” Blake McCully, Jonathan Panteleon, Javier Soto, Tom Prewitt, and Terry Hill, just to name a few.

Initially established as a part-time venture in the spring of 2001; Sundance Graphics allowed Greg the opportunity to delve into his hot rod inspired art.  Opportunities came slowly at first, but eventually began to increase.  With encouragement from family and friends; the support of his loving wife, Kristy; and after a twenty year career as a residential designer; Sundance Graphics became a full-time venture.  Greg was finally able to dedicate himself to the career he’d always wanted.  If you can’t find him in his shop, with airbrush or paint brush in hand, then you’ll probably find him on the road, cruisin’ with Kristy and Lil' Will, in their ’57 Chevy 210.
